..Sardinia
is the second biggest island in the Mediterranean Sea and
can be reached with a short flight from Rome or other major
Italian cities as well as other European airports. There are
no airports in Palau, you will have to fly to either Olbia
airport a 30 minute car journey to Palau, or to Alghero airport
with a two hour car journey to Palau up the coastal road where
you will pass deserted beaches and old fishing towns. The
most convenient way to visit Sardinia is to rent a car, as
public transportation services are not abundant between towns
and villages of the coast.
Palau
is definitely one of the most spectacular and noteworthy seaside
towns in Gallura and bordering the Emerald Coast. It's also
an important landing place for ferries coming from Corsica
and the archipelago of La Maddalena. Its modern harbour's
development is tied to the entire extending coastline, offering
a variety of dream-like bays, uncontaminated spiagge and small
rocky islands that emerge from a crystal-clear sea teaming
with life. Palau's artistically shaped coastlines are sculpted
by the wind that generates a wide variety of shapes and forms
in its rocks. The most famous is that of dell'Orso.
Over thousands of years, the atmospheric agents have amazingly
transformed this rock to unmistakably appear like a bear.
For those wishing to travel coast-to-coast while also visiting
Palau's surrounding hinterland characterised by lush, Mediterranean
vegetation, the Trenino Verde (green train) has been made
available by Sardinia's Railway and has proven quite successful
amongst tourists. It's fascinating because it travels through
road-less areas that would otherwise be inaccessible. An unimaginable
Sardinia appears from behind its glass windows, through forests,
calm lakes and thick vegetation amidst which the train is
forced to travel. There are numerous itineraries to discover
this corner of paradise.
For those deciding to adventure through Gallura, Palau is
a destination not to be overlooked. Tourists can choose from
many destinations, some of the more famous include: Porto
Rafael, Capo d'Orso, Costa Serena, Isola dei Gabbiani, Porto
Pollo (surfers' paradise), Stintino's beautiful military fortresses,
Capo d'Orso, Altura and Baragge. Of the many Sardinian destinations,
that of Palau should not be missed.
The Maddalena Archipelago
The Archipelago is made up of twenty-three islands and islets
and is protected by strict preservation regulations that make
it one of the only natural habitats still intact in the Mediterranean.
Recently established is the new Parco Marino. Its emerald
waters, beaches rendered pink by coral fragments, granite
rock formations and its thick, aromatic juniper and myrtle
forests make it one of a kind. The best way to visit the Archipelago
is, naturally, by sea, navigating from island to island, hopping
from one shelter to the next, anchoring in one of the numerous
coves to take a swim. Even though the short distance between
the various islands may relax your worries, it’s always
a good idea to take a look at the meteorological conditions
before setting off. An excursion from the hotel to the smaller
islands (that is, excluding La Maddalena and Caprera) can
be done in one day, or with the right boat, over the course
of several days.
Hotel Palau
Just a short walk separates it from the Port and Marina, one
of the most beautiful of Sardinia. The Hotel is located on
the upper part of Palau, one of Sardinia’s famous tourist
destinations, looking out over an extraordinary panorama of
the Maddalena, Caprera and the other islands of the archipelago,
as well as Corsica and part of Costa Smeralda (“Sardinia’s
‘Emerald Coast’”).
